Massage Therapy Schools offer Retraining for Dejected Professionals

Massage therapy schools have seen a spike in new enrollments lately and many blame the struggling professional sector.

As more well-educated people become unemployed, they begin to seek out secondary career paths; many in the art of massage therapy.

Retraining is a term we hear a lot about these days because it applies to anyone who was already working in a specific field of study, but is going back to school for training in a second discipline. Massage therapy schools are retraining professionals to become experts at something they enjoy: the gift of healing.

For many, the recent spike in massage therapy school enrollments is no surprise. On a philosophical level massage therapy is a way to heal others, which is something so many may feel is necessary right now.  An Ohio publication, The Record Herald, recently reported on a story familiar to many massage therapy school administrators.

The story goes: A woman who put in 30 years at a company was laid off after that company decided to outsource and move their entire operation. Jobless, but not defeated, 62-year old Phyllis Slifko decided to turn her misfortune into a dream come true by enrolling in massage therapy school. She graduated massage therapy school and is now living out her dreams, albeit late in the game.

Like so many others, Slifko thought that she never had the time or opportunity to follow her passions in massage therapy.  “I’ve been interested in massage therapy and accupressure since I was 28, but as a single mom with no help, I thought I could never find time and or money to go to school,” Slifko said in the news report.

The happy ending: Since completing massage therapy school, Silfko says that she has worked as a massage therapist at a gym and now works at a massage therapy clinic in her home town.
